April 2015

Brisbane Subbuteo Club held its 3rd tournament in Narangba, and it was very pleasing to have 2 new players competing.

Rob and Andrew Bennett from Ipswich joined regulars Rik, Giuseppe and Gus, and a great day of matches ensued.

Although Rob and Andrew have not played for many years, they certainly showed that they can play, and improved as the day wore on. With a month of practice ahead of them, they will no doubt have more of an impact on the next tournament.

After the initial round of games, the semi finals were contested between Giuseppe v Andrew, and Rik v Gus, both close games, with Rik avenging an earlier round defeat to Gus, who recorded his first 2 tournament victories today.

The final was between Giuseppe and Rik, for the 3rd time in as many competitions, and once again, Giuseppe turned on the style for the big occasion, using his Juventus team to run out 4-2 winners over Rik’s Stoke City.

A great day was had by all, and special thanks go to Gus’ son Will, who helped out with the scoreboards.

MAY 2015

The first tournament at the new clubhouse in Woody Point, Redcliffe, proved to be a very good day for all attending. New tables and plenty of space, well organised and great fun.

The same 5 players from the previous tournament contested this one, with some different results.

The initial round of games had the much improved Gus Gillespie leading the league table, setting up a semi final with Rik Bland. Gus proved too good, and took the victory 2-0.

The other semi final between Giuseppe Tardiota and Andrew Bennett was a goal fest, with Andrew defeating the 3 time champion 4-2.

Rik finally beat Giuseppe after losing the previous 3 tournaments in the final, but on this occasion it was for 3rd place.

The final between Gus and Andrew was tight, and went into extra time. Gus drew first blood, and was within seconds of a fantastic victory, but Andrew showed his quality with a very late strike, sending this final to a shootout. Still level after 5 shots, they headed to sudden death, and eventually Andrew got the decisive goal, and with it the trophy!

June 2015

This month’s tournament was a long day, but very enjoyable for all. A new member and a new name on the trophy too.

The first round of games had Rik Bland topping the league table, with Giuseppe Tardiota, Andrew Bennett and Gus Gillespie completing the top four spots.

The semi finals were a repeat of last month’s encounters, with the same outcome – Andrew beat Giuseppe 2-0, and Gus beat Rik 2-1, (in which Rik scored a bizarre own goal).

The final again went to extra time, and this time Gus prevailed and earned a 2-1 victory. Having built slowly, and peaked at the right time, Gus was rightly delighted with his first trophy.

New member Andy Rigden, previously represented Wales internationally, and after a very lengthy lay off, is keen to get back into the flick of things again. A little time to polish up on the latest rules will no doubt see him contesting the trophy.

League Standings -

1) Rik Bland

2) Giuseppe Tardiota

July 2015

Today’s tournament has been the best turn out so far, with 7 players attending. We had 3 tables in play and a great day was once again had by all. With new club shirts, brand new Pegasus astro pitches, on brand new tables, with lights suspended above each table, Brisbane has certainly come a long way in the short time since the club formed in January 2015.

New member Chris Scholes got his first point on the board, welcome Chris! Rob Bennett also had a better point’s tally this time, so well done to Rob too!

The first round of league games surprisingly saw current champ Gus Gillespie fail to make the semi finals. There were goals a plenty in the league games, and some fantastic matches.

LEAGUE STANDINGS

Giuseppe started the day on fire, a real hot shot, smashing all before him, and was top of the league table. Rik started the day very poorly, but rallied in the latter games to finish runner up. Andrew Bennett consistently played well again, and last month’s newcomer Andy Rigby upped his game considerably to force his way into the semi finals.

1) Giuseppe Tardiota. 2) Rik Bland. 3) Andrew Bennett. 4) Andy Rigby.

SEMI FINALS

Giuseppe 1 v 4 Andrew B – level at half time, but Andrew turned on the style to run out with a very impressive victory. This was the 3rd semi final in a row that Andrew swept Giuseppe aside to make the final.

Rik 1 v 1 Andy R  (2 -4 AET/shootout) – Level at full time, and extra time, Andy did not miss a shot in the shootout, a well deserved victory, especially after a remarkable incident showing incredible sportsmanship. Rik once again failed to progress through to the final.

FINAL

Andrew B 6 v 1 Andy R – The first half of the final was a very tight game which changed on a couple of big decisions. Tied at 1-1, Andy conceded a soft penalty, and never really recovered. Andrew turned on the style in the 2nd half, scoring some fabulous goals, and looked every bit the champion. This was Andrew’s 3rd consecutive final, and he is definitely the man to beat. Congratulations Andrew!

Andy also must be given a huge amount of credit for making the final in only his 2nd tournament. Having played at a high level in the UK 20 years ago, he is starting to find his touch after such a lengthy lay off, well done Andy.

Special thanks to ‘Pino’ (Giuseppe) for hosting again, a great venue, great facilities, and a much appreciated BBQ for the guys. Cheers Pino!

BRISBANE SUBBUTEO CLUB 7TH TOURNAMENT

IPSWICH, QLD – 23/08/15

This month’s WASPA tournament hit the road, and was hosted in Ipswich. 5 players contested the trophy, which found another new home. After 7 tournaments played, there have been 4 different winners, proving Brisbane has a good competition each month.

The round of league games saw Rik Bland take a 100% win ratio, topping the table on maximum points, with Giuseppe, Andrew and Gus battling out a lot of draws, in a tight jostle for positions in the league table.

SEMI FINALS

RIK 2 v 2 GUS (2-1 PENS) – Gus took the lead twice in this semi final, and was 15 seconds from a place in the final, but a late goal from Rik took it to extra time and penalties.

GIUSEPPE 2 v 1 ANDREW – Giuseppe had his revenge for losing out to Andrew in the 3 previous semi final showdowns, with a close 2-1 win.

FINAL

RIK BLAND 3 v 2 GIUSEPPE TARDIOTA (AET) – Giuseppe was fast out of the blocks with a goal within the first minute, and it wasn’t long before he added a second to take command of the final. Rik fought back, and after scoring a goal, confidence came back, and managed to get the equaliser in the 2nd half. Extra time followed, and Rik took the lead with a quick burst and shot, taking Giuseppe by surprise, and held on for his first tournament victory.

This really was Rik’s day, with a 100% record in the group games, coming from behind in semi with a last gasp equaliser, and again fighting back from 0-2 behind in the final.

September 2015

BSC 8th Tournament, Woody Point 26/09/15

September’s tournament was an utter goal fest! This produced the highest scoring games so far, some narrow victories and others not quite so even. 80 goals scored in 18 matches, a ratio of 4.4 goals per game, plenty of action and excitement, a celebration of attacking play resulting in a great day once again, well done to all involved.

6 players contested the trophy, which once again changed hands.

The initial round of league fixtures saw Andrew Rigden struggle to shake off the cobwebs of not having played for a while, by shipping plenty of goals, but did manage to bang in a fair few of his own.

Rob Bennett also needs a special mention, as he claimed his first points by taking 2 draws, from Gus Gillespie and Andrew Bennett. He also found the net on 4 occasions, with one goal of the day contender, great to see Rob find some of his old form again, well done Rob.

Rik Bland again topped the leader board at the end of the league fixtures, with Giuseppe runner up on goal difference, Gus Gillespie taking 3rd, Andrew Bennett taking the last semi final spot in 4th.

SEMI FINALS

RIK BLAND 2 -1 ANDREW BENNETT

This semi final between the day’s highest scorers was contested quite negatively, with both players very wary of each other’s free scoring, this resulted in neither playing their usual game. Rik took a 2-0 lead, Andrew pulled one back late on, and nearly  equalised with a shot which stuck under the keepers body, on another day this could easily have wriggled through.

GIUSEPPE TARDIOTA 3 – 0 GUS GILLESPIE

Giuseppe flexed his muscles in this semi final, establishing his game, and not giving Gus too many opportunities to find his rhythm.

FINAL

RIK BLAND 1 – 4 GIUSEPPE TARDIOTA

This was a repeat of last month’s final, and Giuseppe was out for revenge. Rik took the lead after 5 minutes, which seemed to spur Giuseppe into life. An equaliser came on 10 mins, and took the lead with the last kick of the first half. The second half saw Giuseppe play a solid game, great in defence, good possession, and clinical in front of goal. Rik struggled with form in the second half, Giuseppe took control and ended up winning comfortably, to get his hands back on the trophy. A worthy winner!

Special thanks to host Giuseppe for organisation and bbq, and also to photographers James and Wll.

FISTF TOURNAMENT

MELBOURNE 10/10/15

Brisbane Subbuteo Club had 2 representatives competing in the Melbourne FISTF event, Rik Bland and Giuseppe Tardiota. As luck would have it, both players were drawn into the same group of 5, only 2 could progress to the next round of knockout. Each group had a top seed, our Group had Elliot Kennedy from Sydney Falcons, who defeated Rik 3-1, and Giuseppe 2-0, and so took the top spot. 2nd place was decided by the game between Rik and Giuseppe, which was tight, but Rik managed to take the game 1-0 and so finished 2nd in the group and moved to the quarter finals where he had to play top seed and eventual winner Chris Thomas (ranked world no.4 in FISTF rankings last year). Chris is a formiddable player at the top level, and was far too good for Rik, taking a 9-0 win, but a great experience to play such a top player.

Giuseppe finished 3rd in the group stage, so dropped out of the FISTF tournament, and into a WASPA tournament for players that didn't progress from group stages. He managed to get to the final where he met Luke Radzininski for the second year running, and was unfortunate to end up on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline again.

Both players had a great time, and represented Brisbane well.
